Soil aeration is inversely proportional to the water holding capacity of soil.

Soil aeration refers to the presence of air in the soil. It is an important factor for the growth and survival of plants and other organisms in the soil. Adequate soil aeration ensures the proper exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the soil and the atmosphere, which is essential for the respiration of plant roots and soil organisms.

On the other hand, the water holding capacity of soil refers to the ability of the soil to retain water. It is determined by the soil's texture, structure, and organic matter content. Soils with high water holding capacity can retain more water, while soils with low water holding capacity drain water quickly.

Now, let's understand the relationship between soil aeration and water holding capacity of soil:

1. Soil Pore Spaces:
- Soil pore spaces refer to the gaps or openings between soil particles.
- These spaces allow for the movement of air, water, and nutrients within the soil.
- Soils with larger pore spaces have better aeration as air can easily move through these spaces.
- Conversely, soils with smaller pore spaces restrict the movement of air, leading to poor soil aeration.

2. Diameter of Soil Particles:
- The diameter of soil particles affects the size of soil pore spaces.
- Soils with larger particles (such as sandy soils) have larger pore spaces, allowing for better aeration.
- In contrast, soils with smaller particles (such as clay soils) have smaller pore spaces, limiting the movement of air and reducing soil aeration.

3. Water Holding Capacity of Soil:
- Soils with high water holding capacity have a greater ability to retain water.
- When the soil is saturated with water, the pore spaces become filled with water, reducing the availability of air.
- As a result, the soil becomes poorly aerated, which can adversely affect the growth of plants and soil organisms.

Therefore, soil aeration is inversely proportional to the water holding capacity of the soil. Soils with high water holding capacity tend to have poor soil aeration, while soils with low water holding capacity have better soil aeration.
