The problem consists of a question followed by 2 statements. Decide whether the data in the statements are sufficient to the answer the question. Choose the option accordingly.
There are 200 people in a classroom out of which 20% failed in both subjects i.e., Physics and Chemistry. What is the difference between 6 times the number of students who passed in Chemistry to 5 times the number of students who passed in Physics?
I. The ratio of number of students that passed in Physics and Chemistry is 5:6.
II. The ratio of number of students who passed only in Physics to those passed only in Chemistry is 2:3.
  • a)
Statement I alone is sufficient, but Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
  • b)
Statement II alone is sufficient, but Statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
  • c)
Both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient.
  • d)
    Either statement alone is sufficient.
  • e)
Both statements together are not sufficient to answer the question.
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The problem consists of a question followed by 2 statements. Decide w...
Number of people in Classroom = 200
Students failed in both subjects = 0.2×200 = 40
Students passed in at least 1 subject = 200 - 40 = 160.
Let the number of people that passed only in Physics, only in Chemistry and passed in both subjects be p, c and x respectively.
∴ p + c + x = 160.
Statement I: We see, from Venn diagram,
(p + x)/(c + x) = 5/6
⇒ 6p + 6x = 5c + 5x
⇒ 5c - 6p = x
and, p + c = 160 - x
Adding,
6c - 5p = 160.
Statement I: alone is sufficient.
Statement II:
We see, from Venn Diagram,
p/c = 2/3 = k(let)
p = 2k and c = 3k
6c - 5p = 18k - 10k = 8k.
Also, p + c = 160 - x
⇒ 5k = 160 - x
Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Problem: What is the difference between 6 times the number of students who passed in Chemistry to 5 times the number of students who passed in Physics?

Statement I: The ratio of number of students that passed in Physics and Chemistry is 5:6.

Statement II: The ratio of number of students who passed only in Physics to those passed only in Chemistry is 2:3.

Solution:
To find the difference between 6 times the number of students who passed in Chemistry to 5 times the number of students who passed in Physics, we need to know the number of students who passed in Physics and Chemistry separately.

Statement I: The ratio of number of students that passed in Physics and Chemistry is 5:6.

This statement only gives us the ratio of students who passed in Physics and Chemistry. It does not give us the total number of students who passed in either subject. Therefore, this statement alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Statement II: The ratio of number of students who passed only in Physics to those passed only in Chemistry is 2:3.

This statement also only gives us the ratio of students who passed only in Physics and those who passed only in Chemistry. It does not tell us anything about the total number of students who passed in either subject, nor does it tell us anything about the number of students who passed in both subjects. Therefore, this statement alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Conclusion: Since neither statement alone is sufficient to answer the question, the correct answer is option A.
