I was a literature student and never liked history from the very beginning. The reason I was not able to clear the UPSC interview in my first attempt was History and Current affairs.
That's why I was more cautious in my second attempt. I did not have the time nor the interest for cramming each and every topic of history, so I analyzed all the previous year papers and strategized on what should be focused more
(I am not suggesting that you can leave any topic, you just have to prioritize the topics for smart results).
Modern History is one of the most important subjects in your UPSC preparation. It is comparatively easier than the ancient and medieval and the return of investment is also very high in modern history.
Here are the important parts that should be covered from Spectrum for Modern history:
• Advent of Europeans And Consolidation of British Power in India
• Rising Resentment Against Company Rule
• National Movement (1905-1918)
• Era of Mass Nationalism Begins (1919-1939)
• Towards Freedom and Partition (1939-1947)
• India Under British Rule: Governance and Other Aspects
After completing the History section, I read the summaries of each chapter of Spectrum on EduRev. Those summaries helped me a lot during the revision and when I was attempting mock tests as well.
Going it alone with your IAS preparation takes a lot of courage. However, if you are consistent in your studies and prepare effectively, you will undoubtedly succeed. Work hard and intelligently, and don't lose sight of your goal.
All the best for the Exams!
