Jainism is a very ancient religion. As per some source it is as old as Vedic religion but the origin of it is still not confirmed. There were 24 Tirthankaras, the last was Vardhaman Mahavira. The first Tirthankara was Rishabhdev and 23rd was Pashvantha, was born in Varanasi. All of them were Kshatriyas by birth.
Mahavira was considered as the last Tirthankara, born at kundagrama at Vaishali. His father, Siddhartha (head of the jnatrika clan) and mother Trishala (sister of Lichchhavi chief Chetaka). He was married to Yasoda and had daughter Anojja or Priyadarshana.
At the age of 30 he left his home and opted for life of a wandering ascetic. After 13 years, he attained the highest spiritual knowledge at Jimbhikagrama village under Sal tree aged 42. Thereafter, he was called Mahavira, jina, Jitendriya and Nirgrantha .
He died at Pava near Rajgriha at the age of 72.
