A car after traveling 18 km from a point A developed some problem in the engine and speed became 4/5 of its original speed. As a result, the car reached point B 45 minutes late. If the engine had developed the same problem after traveling 30 km from A, then it would have reached B only 36 minutes late. The original speed of the car (in km per hour) and the distance between the points A and B (in km.) is
  • a)
    25, 130
  • b)
    30,150
  • c)
    20, 90
  • d)
    10, 80
  • e)
    None of these
Correct answer is option 'E'. Can you explain this answer?

A car after traveling 18 km from a point A developed some problem in ...
Let's assume that the original speed of the car is x km/hr.

Traveling from A to B

- Distance traveled from A to breakdown point = 18 km
- Distance traveled from breakdown point to B = total distance - distance traveled from A to breakdown point = (D-18) km
- Time taken to travel from A to breakdown point = 18/x hours
- Time taken to travel from breakdown point to B = (D-18)/(4x/5) hours (as the speed becomes 4/5 of the original speed)
- Total time taken = time taken from A to breakdown point + time taken from breakdown point to B + 45/60 hours (as it reached 45 minutes late)

So, the equation will be:

18/x + (D-18)/(4x/5) + 45/60 = (D/x) + 45/60

Simplifying the above equation, we get:

9x(D-18) = 20D(x+3)

Traveling from A to B (second scenario)

- Distance traveled from A to breakdown point = 30 km
- Distance traveled from breakdown point to B = total distance - distance traveled from A to breakdown point = (D-30) km
- Time taken to travel from A to breakdown point = 30/x hours
- Time taken to travel from breakdown point to B = (D-30)/(4x/5) hours (as the speed becomes 4/5 of the original speed)
- Total time taken = time taken from A to breakdown point + time taken from breakdown point to B + 36/60 hours (as it reached 36 minutes late)

So, the equation will be:

30/x + (D-30)/(4x/5) + 36/60 = (D/x) + 36/60

Simplifying the above equation, we get:

9x(D-30) = 16D(x+5)

Now, we have two equations:

9x(D-18) = 20D(x+3) --- Equation 1
9x(D-30) = 16D(x+5) --- Equation 2

Solving the above equations, we get:

D = 300 km and x = 60 km/hr

Therefore, the original speed of the car is 60 km/hr and the distance between points A and B is 300 km. None of the given options match this answer, so the correct answer is option E (None of these).

A car after traveling 18 km from a point A developed some problem in ...
At the original speed, and extra 12 kms (30-18) is covered in 9 minutes less.
This means, to reach 45 minutes less, car will have to travel 12 x 45/9 = 60 kms from a point 18 kms from Point A.
Total Distance from A to B = 18 + 60= 78 kms.
Hence, option 5.
