Shyam at A and Ram at C, are at opposite ends of a rectangle's diagonal AC. The rectangle is 7 kms (BC) by 10.5 kms (AB). They both start their journey towards the third vertex (B) of the rectangle in a circular path such that the diameter for their journey is the distance between them and the vertex they are travelling towards. After reaching that vertex, they exchange their speeds and move towards each other's starting position using shortest distance.
If Shyam and Ram reach points C and A respectively in the same time, what is the ratio of Shyam's speed to Ram's speed?
  • a)
    3 : 5
  • b)
    3 : 2
  • c)
    1 : 3
  • d)
    1 : 2
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

from the given we can deduce the following about Shyam and Ram. Let their speed be S km/hr and R km/hr respectively.
BD = √(72 + 10.52) = 12.6
Distance Covered by Shyam from A to B
Distance Covered by Shyam from B to C = 7 at Speed R
Total Time Taken
Distance Covered by Ram from C to B
Distance Covered by Shyam from B to A = 10.5 at Speed S
Total Time Taken
Given the total time taken by both of them is the same,
Hence, the correct option is (b).
