The metal that corrodes is called the anode, while the other metal is called the cathode. The rate of corrosion depends on the electrical conductivity of the metals and the relative size of their surface areas.
For example, if a copper wire is connected to a zinc nail, the zinc nail will corrode faster than the copper wire because zinc is more reactive than copper. This is because zinc has a lower electrode potential than copper, which means it is more likely to give up electrons and corrode when it is in contact with copper.
Galvanic corrosion can be prevented by using a material called a galvanic separator, which is a non-conductive material that prevents the flow of electricity between the two metals. Other methods of preventing galvanic corrosion include coating the metals with a protective layer, using a conductive material with a lower electrode potential than the metals, or designing the system to minimize the flow of current between the metals.
