Number of Subjects in UPSC IAS Exam
The UPSC IAS exam comprises of three stages - Preliminary exam, Main exam, and Interview. The Preliminary exam consists of two objective-type papers, namely General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT). The Main exam consists of nine papers, out of which two papers are qualifying in nature and the marks obtained in the remaining seven papers are considered for the final merit list. The seven papers are as follows:
- Paper-A: Indian Language (qualifying)
- Paper-B: English (qualifying)
- Paper-I: Essay
- Paper-II: General Studies-I
- Paper-III: General Studies-II
- Paper-IV: General Studies-III
- Paper-V: General Studies-IV
- Paper-VI: Optional Paper-I
- Paper-VII: Optional Paper-II
Choosing an Optional Subject
The UPSC allows candidates to choose one optional subject for the Main exam from a list of around 50 subjects. The optional subject consists of two papers, each of 250 marks, making it a total of 500 marks. The list of optional subjects includes various disciplines such as History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and many more.
It is important to note that the optional subject plays a crucial role in the final merit list. Therefore, candidates should choose their optional subject wisely, considering their interest, aptitude, and availability of study material and guidance.
