Consider the following unit steps commonly adopted in Solid Waste Management (SWM) of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW);
Collection (C), Transportation (TR), Disposal (D), and storage of MSW (SR). The order of these unit processes (first to last) in a conventional SWM system is:
  • a)
    C → SR → D → TR
  • b)
    SR → C → TR → D
  • c)
    TR → C → SR → D
  • d)
    SR → TR → C → D
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Consider the following unit steps commonly adopted in Solid Waste Man...
The order adopted is 1. Storage of Waste (SR), 2. Collection of waste (C), 3. Transportation of waste (TR), and 4. Disposal of waste (D)
Storage of waste at the source is the first essential step of SWM. The collection of waste is the second essential step of SWM activity. In the collection system, it is necessary to ensure that waste stored at the source is collected and is not disposed off on the streets, drains, water bodies, etc. The collection step has to coordinate well with the first step i.e. Storage of waste at the source. Then, In the third step (Transportation) - all the waste collected through the collection system, from the households, shops, and establishments has to be taken to the processing or disposal site. All the waste collected from the sources of waste generation is temporarily stored at a commonplace called "Waste storage deposits" and then at last it is transported in bulk to the processing/disposal sites.

Solid Waste Management (SWM) Unit Processes

Collection (C)
- The first unit process in a conventional SWM system is collection.
- Collection involves the gathering and removal of solid waste from various sources such as households, commercial establishments, and public spaces.
- This process includes the use of waste bins, trucks, and manpower to collect the waste and transport it to the next stage.

Storage of MSW (SR)
- The second unit process in a conventional SWM system is the storage of MSW.
- After collection, the solid waste is stored temporarily in a designated area.
- This storage may be in waste transfer stations, material recovery facilities, or landfill sites.
- The purpose of storage is to facilitate further handling and transportation of the waste.

Disposal (D)
- The third unit process in a conventional SWM system is disposal.
- Disposal involves the final disposal of solid waste in an appropriate manner.
- This can include landfilling, incineration, composting, or any other method approved by regulatory authorities.
- The purpose of disposal is to manage the waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact and public health risks.

Transportation (TR)
- The last unit process in a conventional SWM system is transportation.
- After the waste has been collected, stored, and disposed of, transportation is needed to move the waste from one stage to another.
- This can involve the use of trucks, trains, barges, or any other mode of transportation suitable for the specific waste management system.

Correct Order of Unit Processes
The correct order of the unit processes in a conventional SWM system is as follows:

SR → C → TR → D

- The waste is first stored temporarily after collection (SR).
- It is then transported to the next stage (C) where it is gathered from various sources.
- The waste is further transported (TR) to the disposal site (D) for final disposal.

This order ensures that the waste is properly managed and handled at each stage, minimizing the risks to the environment and public health.
