    Solution:

    Total percentage of particles removed can be calculated using the following formula:

    % Particle Removal = (1 - e^-kX100)

    where,
    k = constant related to Surface Overflow Rate (SOR)
    SOR = 43.2 m3/m2.d
    k = (0.0028 x SOR) - 0.0003
    k = (0.0028 x 43.2) - 0.0003
    k = 0.1191

    Now, we need to calculate the effective settling velocity for each particle size:

    Effective settling velocity = (settling velocity x removal efficiency)

    For particles with settling velocity of 0.1 mm/s:
    Effective settling velocity = (0.1 x 0.8) = 0.08 mm/s

    For particles with settling velocity of 0.2 mm/s:
    Effective settling velocity = (0.2 x 0.9) = 0.18 mm/s

    For particles with settling velocity of 1.0 mm/s:
    Effective settling velocity = (1.0 x 0.98) = 0.98 mm/s

    Now, we can calculate the total percentage of particles removed as follows:

    % Particle Removal = (% of particles with settling velocity of 0.08 mm/s x % of particles with settling velocity of 0.18 mm/s x % of particles with settling velocity of 0.98 mm/s) X 100
    % Particle Removal = (10 x 60 x 98)/1000 X 100
    % Particle Removal = 56%

    Therefore, the total percentage of particles removed is 56%.

    Surface overflow rate
    Settling velocity more than 0.5 mm/s will be removed 100% and rest is proportional to their settling velocity.
