The given question is followed by two statements: select the most appropriate option that solves the question
Capacity of a solution tank A is 70% of the capacity of tank B. How many gallons of solution are in tank A and tank B?
Statements:
Tank A is 80% full and tank B is 40% full
  • Tank A if full contains 14,000 gallons of solution
    • a)
      Statement 1 alone is sufficient
    • b)
      Statement 2 alone is sufficient
    • c)
Either statement 1 or 2 alone is sufficient
    • d)
Both the statements 1 and 2 together are sufficient
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

The given question is followed by two statements: select the most app...
Statement 1 can be used to solve the question if capacity of both tanks is already known
Statement-2 can be used if it is known what quantity of each tank is full/empty.
    Therefore, by using both statements
Let capacity of tank B is x
    70/100x = 14000
    = x = 20000 gallons
    Solution in tank A = 80/100 × 14000
    = 11200 gallons
    Solution in tank A = 40/100 × 20000
    = 8000 gallons
    ∴ Total solution = 11200 + 8000
    = 19200 gallons

The given question is followed by two statements: select the most app...
    Analysis:
    Given:
    - Capacity of tank A = 70% of tank B
    - Tank A is 80% full
    - Tank B is 40% full
    - Tank A full capacity = 14,000 gallons

    Statement 1:
    - Tank A is 80% full and tank B is 40% full
    - This statement gives information about the current fill levels of both tanks
    - It does not directly provide the capacity of each tank
    - This statement alone is not sufficient to determine the exact capacities of tank A and tank B

    Statement 2:
    - Tank A if full contains 14,000 gallons of solution
    - This statement gives the full capacity of tank A
    - This information alone is not sufficient to determine the capacity of tank B or the amount of solution in it

    Combining Statements 1 and 2:
    - From statement 1, we know that tank A is 80% full, and from statement 2, we know that tank A's full capacity is 14,000 gallons
    - Using this information, we can calculate the actual capacity of tank A as 14,000 / 0.8 = 17,500 gallons
    - Since tank A's capacity is 70% of tank B's capacity, we can calculate tank B's capacity as 17,500 / 0.7 = 25,000 gallons
    - Therefore, combining both statements gives us the capacities of tank A and tank B, making the answer option D
Therefore, both statements 1 and 2 together are sufficient to determine the capacities of tank A and tank B.
