Type of Chemical Reactions

Chemical reactions can be classified into different types based on their behavior and the type of products formed. The following are the types of chemical reactions:

  • Combustion Reactions

  • Synthesis Reactions

  • Decomposition Reactions

  • Single Displacement Reactions

  • Double Displacement Reactions

  • Acid-Base Reactions

  • Redox Reactions

Chemical Reactions Explained

(a) CaO + H2O -> Ca(OH)2

This is an example of a synthesis reaction, also known as a combination reaction. This type of reaction occurs when two or more reactants combine to form a new product. In this reaction, calcium oxide (CaO) and water (H2O) combine to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). The chemical equation for the reaction is balanced, with one molecule of CaO reacting with one molecule of H2O to produce one molecule of Ca(OH)2.

(b) 3BaCl2 + Al(SO4)3 -> 2AlCl3 + 3BaSO4

This is an example of a double displacement reaction, also known as a metathesis reaction. This type of reaction occurs when two compounds react and the cations and anions switch places to form two new compounds. In this reaction, barium chloride (BaCl2) and aluminum sulfate (Al(SO4)3) react to form aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and barium sulfate (BaSO4). The chemical equation for the reaction is balanced, with three molecules of BaCl2 reacting with one molecule of Al(SO4)3 to produce two molecules of AlCl3 and three molecules of BaSO4.

(c) 2FeSO4 -> Heat -> Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3

This is an example of a decomposition reaction, which occurs when a compound is broken down into two or more smaller compounds or elements. In this reaction, iron(II) sulfate (FeSO4) is heated to produce iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and sulfur trioxide (SO3). The chemical equation for the reaction is balanced, with two molecules of FeSO4 reacting to produce one molecule of Fe2O3, one molecule of SO2, and one molecule of SO3.
