Therefore, the current through the cell is 0.404A and TPD across the third wire is -0.25V.
- E1 = 1.5V
- R1 = 2Ω
- E2 = 2V
- R2 = 1Ω
- Negative terminal joined by 6Ω
- Positive terminal joined by 4Ω
- Third wire of 8Ω connected at mid-point
To Find:
- Current through the cell
- TPD across 3rd wire
Solution:
- Calculate Equivalent Resistance (Req) of the Circuit
- As the negative terminal is connected to a 6Ω resistor and the positive terminal is connected to a 4Ω resistor, they are in series.
- Therefore, their equivalent resistance = R6 + R4 = 6Ω + 4Ω = 10Ω
- The 10Ω resistor is in parallel with the 8Ω resistor. Hence, their equivalent resistance = (10Ω * 8Ω) / (10Ω + 8Ω) = 4.44Ω
- Now, the 4.44Ω resistor is in series with R1 and R2. Hence, their equivalent resistance = R1 + R2 + 4.44Ω = 2Ω + 1Ω + 4.44Ω = 7.44Ω
- Calculate Current through the Cell
- Current through the circuit = (E1 + E2) / Req = (1.5V + 2V) / 7.44Ω = 0.404A
- Calculate TPD across 3rd Wire
- The third wire of 8Ω is connected at the mid-point of the circuit, which divides the circuit into two halves.
- The voltage at the mid-point is the average of the voltages at the positive and negative terminals.
- Hence, TPD across the third wire = (E1 - E2) / 2 = (1.5V - 2V) / 2 = -0.25V
