The minimum support price for wheat, paddy and coarse cereals is fixed by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices.
Important Points:-
  • The main policy objective of the Department of Food and Public Distribution is to ensure food security of the country through timely and efficient procurement of food grains. 
  • This includes procurement of various food grains, keeping and maintaining food stocks, delivery of food grains to distribution agencies and monitoring of production, stock and price levels of food grains.
  • In this, through the Minimum Support Price Mechanism, to encourage the farmers by the fair price of their produce, distribution of food grains to the families living below poverty line and to cover the families living in starvation under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, those who are short of food grains. 
  • The focus has been on setting up grain banks in the areas and inclusion of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the public distribution system.
  • This department is also responsible for framing policies related to the sugar sector such as fixation of Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane payable by sugar factories, development and regulation of sugar industry (including training in sugar technology), and levy price of sugar. 
  • This department also formulates policies for export and import of food grains, sugar and edible oils.
