Yves can paint a certain fence in 1/2 the time it takes Marcel to paint the same fence. If they work together, each at his own constant rate, how many hours will it take them to paint the fence?

(1) Yves can paint the fence by himself in 3 hours.
(2) Working together, each at his own constant rate, they can paint the fence in 1/3 the time it would take Marcel, working alone, to paint the fence.

Statement (1) says that Yves can paint the fence by himself in 3 hours. This information alone is sufficient to answer the question because we can determine Yves's rate of painting. If Yves can complete the fence in 3 hours, it means he paints at a rate of 1/3 of the fence per hour. Therefore, we can calculate the combined rate of Yves and Marcel when working together.
However, Statement (2) does not provide any additional information beyond what is already stated in Statement (1). Therefore, it is not sufficient on its own to answer the question.
Since Statement (1) alone is sufficient to answer the question, while Statement (2) alone is not sufficient, the answer is A: Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
