First we will take out the electronic configuration of copper by hund's rule..........4s1 and then last will be 3d10......then it's clear that outer most orbit represents period here period is 4 and valence electron is 1(here we can't apply the rule of adding last two configuration becoz it's become  more than 8 which is not possible )..... now while taking out group we will add up the last two electrons (we do here this becoz it's an exception)we will get 1+10=11 so 11 is the group.................hope it's correct
