Memory in a computer system is required for storage and retrieval of the instructions and data. A system uses a variety of devices for storing these instructions and data that are required for its operation.
Statement (A):
Random Access Memory (RAM):
  • It is a volatile memory i.e. the data disappear from it when the power is off.
  • It is known as the Read-Write Memory. i.e. the user can write information into RAM and read information from it.
  • It is called random access since any memory location can be accessed randomly for reading and writing. The access time is the same for each memory location.
  • It stores data that the computer needs to use temporarily. So it is faster than the secondary storage devices (hard drive).
So, Statement (A) is correct.
Statement (B):
The Number System: A number system includes the number of independent digits used in the number system (the base), the place values of the different digits constituting the number and the maximum numbers that can be written with the given number of digits. Hexadecimal number systems have a radix 16.
Hexadecimal to Decimal Conversion:
  • Step 1: Write down the hexadecimal number.
  • (99)16
  • Step 2: Show each digit place as an increasing power of 16.
  • 9 × 161 + 9 × 160
  • Step 3: Convert each hexadecimal digits values to decimal values then perform the math. 9 × 16 + 9 × 1 = (153)10
  • The hexadecimal number 99 is the same as the decimal number 153.
So, Statement (B) is incorrect.
Hence, it is clear from the given points that it is usually faster to access data stored in RAM than that in hard drive.
