Eligibility Criteria for Appearing in the Civil Engineering Optional Subject Exam

To appear in the Civil Engineering optional subject exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), candidates need to meet certain eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria for the Civil Engineering optional subject exam are as follows:

Educational Qualification:
Candidates must have a degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institution. The degree should be in accordance with the education requirements specified by the UPSC.

Age Limit:
Candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age as on August 1st of the year of examination. However, there are certain age relaxations for candidates belonging to specific categories:

- For candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, the maximum age limit is relaxed by 3 years, i.e., they can apply up to the age of 35.
- For candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories, the maximum age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., they can apply up to the age of 37.
- For candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category, the maximum age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., they can apply up to the age of 37.
- For candidates who have been domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir during the period from January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1989, the maximum age limit is relaxed by 5 years.

Number of Attempts:
Candidates belonging to the General category can appear for the Civil Engineering optional subject exam a maximum of 6 times. However, there are certain attempts relaxations for candidates belonging to specific categories:

- For candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, the maximum number of attempts is relaxed to 9.
- For candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories, there is no limit on the number of attempts.

Nationality:
Candidates must be either:
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam, or from any other country or territory as specified by the Indian Government, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
