The roll-off factor, also known as the excess bandwidth factor, is denoted by β. It determines the shape of the pulses used in the transmission of data.

For Nyquist criterion pulses, the roll-off factor is given by the formula:

β = (R - 1) / (2B)

where R is the data rate and B is the bandwidth.

In this case, the data rate is 12 kbps (12,000 bps) and the bandwidth is 8 kHz (8,000 Hz).

β = (12,000 - 1) / (2 * 8,000)
= 11,999 / 16,000
≈ 0.7499

Therefore, the value of the roll-off factor is approximately 0.7499.
