In Union Budget 2023-24, a separate grant was given to IITs to develop lab-grown diamonds. In this context, consider the following statements with respect to lab- grown diamonds:
1. Their basic physical and chemical properties are similar to the naturally occurring diamonds.
2. In the Chemical Vapour Deposition method, the seed diamond is heated inside a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas to produce a lab-grown diamond.
3. These synthetic diamonds have low thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
  • a)
    1 and 2 only
  • b)
    2 and 3 only
  • c)
    1 and 3 only
  • d)
    1, 2 and 3

In Union Budget 2023-24, a separate grant was given to IITs to develop...
  • During Budget 2023-24 speech, a number of schemes to promote their research and development in India have been announced.
    • Customs duty on the seeds used in lab-grown diamond manufacturing will be reduced
    • It was announced a grant to IITs to facilitate the growth of LGDs in India. x
  • Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that are produced using specific technology which mimics the geological processes that grow natural diamonds. LGDs are chemically, physically and optically diamond like and thus are difficult to identify as “lab-grown.” Hence statement 1 is correct.
  • They are not the same as “diamond simulants”. While materials such as Moissanite, Cubic Zirconia (CZ), White Sapphire, YAG, etc. are “diamond simulants” that simply attempt to “look” like a diamond, they lack the sparkle and durability of a diamond and are thus easily identifiable.
  • LGDs are mostly manufactured through two processes: High pressure, high temperature (HPHT) method and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) method.
    • Both these methods of growing diamonds artificially begin with a seed, which is a slice of another diamond. In the HPHT method, the seed, along with pure graphite carbon, is exposed to temperatures around 1,500 degrees Celsius and extremely high pressure.
    • In the CVD method, the seed is heated to around 800 degrees Celsius inside a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas. The gas sticks to the seed, gradually building the diamond. Hence statement 2 is correct.
  • LGDs have basic properties similar to natural diamonds, including their optical dispersion, which provide them the signature diamond sheen. However, since they are created in controlled environments, many of their properties can be enhanced for various purposes.
  • For instance, LGDs are most often used for industrial purposes, in machines and tools. Their hardness and extra strength make them ideal for use as cutters. Furthermore, pure synthetic diamonds have high thermal conductivity, but negligible electrical conductivity. This combination is invaluable for electronics where such diamonds can be used as a heat spreader for high-power laser diodes, laser arrays and high-power transistors. Hence statement 3 is not correct.

Basic Properties of Lab-Grown Diamonds:
- Statement 1 is correct as lab-grown diamonds have the same physical and chemical properties as naturally occurring diamonds. They are essentially identical in composition and structure.

Chemical Vapour Deposition Method:
- Statement 2 is correct. In the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) method, a seed diamond is placed in a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas. The seed diamond is then heated, causing the gas to break down and the carbon atoms to deposit onto the seed, gradually forming a diamond crystal.

Thermal and Electrical Conductivity:
- Statement 3 is incorrect. Lab-grown diamonds actually have high thermal conductivity, similar to natural diamonds. They also do not conduct electricity well, making them excellent insulators.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A' as statements 1 and 2 are accurate while statement 3 is not. Lab-grown diamonds are increasingly being used in various industries due to their high quality and ethical sourcing, making them a valuable area of research for institutions like IITs.
