The first Mughal emperor was Babur. He was a descendant of Timur on his father's side and Genghis Khan on his mother's side. Babur founded the Mughal Empire in India in 1526 after defeating Ibrahim Lodhi, the Sultan of Delhi, at the First Battle of Panipat.

Babur's descendants, including his grandson Akbar the Great, continued to expand and strengthen the Mughal Empire, which reached its peak under Emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century.
