What is diffusion?

Diffusion

Definition:
  • Diffusion is the process by which particles spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

Types of Diffusion:
  • Simple Diffusion: Involves the movement of small, non-polar molecules across the cell membrane.
  • Facilitated Diffusion: Requires the help of transport proteins to move larger or polar molecules across the membrane.
  • Osmosis: Specifically refers to the diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane.

Factors affecting Diffusion:
  • Concentration Gradient: The greater the difference in concentration between two areas, the faster the rate of diffusion.
  • Temperature: Higher temperatures generally lead to faster diffusion rates as particles have more energy.
  • Surface Area: Larger surface areas allow for more particles to come into contact and diffuse.
  • Particle Size: Smaller particles tend to diffuse more quickly than larger ones.

Importance of Diffusion:
  • Essential for processes such as gas exchange in the lungs, nutrient absorption in the intestines, and waste removal in the kidneys.
  • Crucial for maintaining homeostasis within living organisms.
