Given Information:
- Initial average age of students in the class = 18
- Average age of students added to the class = 16
- Resultant average age of the class = 17

Let the number of students initially present be x and the number of students added be y.

Calculation:
- Total sum of ages before addition = 18x
- Total sum of ages after addition = 16y
- Total sum of ages after addition = 17(x + y)

Equation:
18x + 16y = 17(x + y)
18x + 16y = 17x + 17y
y = x

Ratio:
The ratio of the number of students added to the class to the total number of students initially present in the class is 1:1.
Therefore, for every student initially present in the class, one student was added. This results in the average age of the class decreasing from 18 to 17.
