Types of Images from the Lesson Light Reflection and Refraction

Real Image:
Real images are formed when light rays actually meet at a point after reflection or refraction. These images can be projected onto a screen and are always inverted. Real images are formed by concave mirrors and converging lenses.

Virtual Image:
Virtual images are formed when light rays appear to meet at a point after reflection or refraction but do not actually converge. These images cannot be projected onto a screen and are always erect. Virtual images are formed by convex mirrors and diverging lenses.

Inverted Image:
An inverted image is formed when the top of an object appears at the bottom of the image and vice versa. This type of image is commonly produced by concave mirrors and converging lenses.

Erect Image:
An erect image is formed when the top of an object appears at the top of the image and vice versa. This type of image is commonly produced by convex mirrors and diverging lenses.

Magnified Image:
A magnified image is larger in size compared to the object. This type of image is formed when the object is placed beyond the focal point of a converging lens or concave mirror.

Diminished Image:
A diminished image is smaller in size compared to the object. This type of image is formed when the object is placed between the focal point and the lens or mirror of a converging lens or concave mirror.
