A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in...
Given data:
Speed of stream (s) = 2 km/h
Time taken downstream = 4 hours
Time taken upstream = 5 hours

Let the speed of the steamer in still water be x km/h.

Speed of steamer downstream:
= (Speed of steamer in still water + Speed of stream)
= (x + 2) km/h

Speed of steamer upstream:
= (Speed of steamer in still water - Speed of stream)
= (x - 2) km/h

Distance = speed * time

Distance downstream:
= (x + 2) * 4
= 4x + 8 km

Distance upstream:
= (x - 2) * 5
= 5x - 10 km

As the distances downstream and upstream are the same:
4x + 8 = 5x - 10
x = 18
Therefore, the speed of the steamer in still water is 18 km/h.
