Nutrition in amoeba is holozoic. Thus, solid food particles are ingested which are then acted upon by enzymes and digested. It is an omnivore, feeding on both plants and animals. Its diet includes bacteria, microscopic plants like the diatoms, minute algae, microscopic animals like other protozoa, nematodes and even dead organic matter.

Mode of nutrition in amoeba

Amoeba is a microscopic organism that belongs to the kingdom Protista. It is a single-celled organism and exhibits a unique mode of nutrition called holozoic nutrition. Holozoic nutrition is a type of nutrition in which an organism ingests solid food particles and then digests them internally.

Explanation of holozoic nutrition in amoeba:

Ingestion:
Amoeba captures its prey by extending its pseudopodia, which are finger-like projections of its cytoplasm. These pseudopodia surround the prey and form a food vacuole. The food vacuole then enters the cell's cytoplasm.

Digestion:
Once the food vacuole is formed, it fuses with lysosomes. Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down the food particles into simpler substances. The enzymes hydrolyze the complex molecules present in the food vacuole into smaller molecules such as amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids.

Absorption:
After digestion, the nutrients are absorbed by the cytoplasm of the amoeba. This absorption occurs through the cell membrane, where the simpler molecules pass into the cytoplasm.

Assimilation:
The absorbed nutrients are utilized by the amoeba for various metabolic activities such as growth, repair, and energy production. The nutrients are assimilated into the cell and used as building blocks for the synthesis of new molecules.

Egestion:
After the digestion and assimilation process, the indigestible waste material is expelled from the cell through a process called exocytosis. The waste material is released from the amoeba's body through a temporary opening called the anal pore.

Conclusion:
Amoeba exhibits holozoic nutrition, where it ingests solid food particles, digests them internally, absorbs the nutrients, assimilates them for various metabolic activities, and expels the indigestible waste material. This mode of nutrition allows amoeba to obtain the necessary nutrients for its survival and growth.
