Control Unit
- Manages and coordinates all activities within the computer.
- Directs the operation of the ALU, memory, and I/O.
- Fetches instructions from memory and decodes them for execution.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
- Performs all arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, etc.).
- Executes logical operations (comparisons, bitwise operations).
- Acts on data provided by memory and outputs the results back to memory or I/O.
Memory
- Stores data and instructions temporarily during processing.
- Comprises primary memory (RAM) for fast access and secondary storage (HDD, SSD) for long-term data retention.
- Facilitates the quick retrieval of instructions by the Control Unit.
Input/Output (I/O) Devices
- Provides the means for users to interact with the computer (keyboard, mouse).
- Enables the computer to communicate with external devices (printers, monitors).
- Handles data transfer between the computer and the outside world.
Instruction Cycle
- The instruction cycle consists of four main stages: Fetch, Decode, Execute, and Store.
- Fetch: Control Unit retrieves an instruction from memory.
- Decode: The instruction is interpreted to identify the operation and required data.
- Execute: ALU processes the data as per the instruction, executing calculations or logical operations.
- Store: Results are written back to memory or sent to an I/O device.
