The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) tested out its light battle tank Zorawar in Gujarat's Hazira on Saturday. DRDO chief Samir V Kamath said Zorawar is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army by the year 2027 after all trials.
Kamat today reviewed the progress made in the project at the Larsen and Toubro plant at Hajira in Gujarat.
The DRDO and L&T have integrated USVs in loitering munitions in the tank learning lessons from the Russia and Ukraine conflict.
The Indian Army has placed an initial order for 59 Zorawar tanks, with plans to potentially procure a total of 354 light tanks. The Zorawar will help balance the scales against China's existing fleet of lightweight mountain tanks, like the Type 15, which have a significant advantage in the high altitudes of Ladakh.
The induction of the Zorawar light tank will provide the Indian Army with a critical capability to rapidly deploy and maneuver in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh and other border areas. Its combination of mobility, firepower and advanced systems will enhance India's overall military posture against China in these strategically important sectors.
The DRDO chief told ANI, "It's indeed a momentous day for all of us to see the light tank in action. It makes me happy and proud. It's indeed an example. In a short period of two years to two and a half years, we have not only designed this tank but made a first prototype and now the first prototype will undergo development trials over the next six months, and then we will be ready to offer it to our users for user trials. Zorawar is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army by the year 2027 after all trials."
The light tank Zorawar with 25 tonnes in weight and it is the first time, a fresh tank has been designed and made ready for trials in such a short time.
Speaking on the occasion, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Executive Vice President Arun Ramchandsaid, "It is a great day for L&T today. Within two years, we have brought the tank to a level where it can be taken for internal trials and very soon for user trials. It has been a big effort, a joint effort between DRDO and L&T, and I think it's a great achievement by both these teams. Nowhere in the world has a new product been deployed in such a short time. It's a wonderful achievement for both DRDO and L&T."
DRDO tank lab director Rajesh Kumar said that the unique thing about the Zorawar tank is its weight as well as the combination of the fundamental parameters of a tank.
"Generally there are three different types of tanks. There are three categories depending on the weight. The heavy tanks, the medium tanks and the light tanks. Each one has its role. One is for protection, one is for offence and these light tanks play a mixed role for both. So if you see a light tank, many players in the world are making light tanks. There are the Western tanks, the Russian tanks, Chinese tanks...what is unique about this tank is the weight as well as the combination of the fundamental parameters of a tank, which is the fire, power, mobility and protection. All three are optimized in such a way that the weight is also maintained. At the same time, you are getting all the parameters. So that is where we stand," Kumar said.
The light tank Zorawar with 25 tonnes in weight and it is the first time, a fresh tank has been designed and made ready for trials in such a short time.
59 of these tanks will be provided to the Army initially and it will be a front runner for the major programme of 295 more of these armoured vehicles.
The Indian Air Force can supply two tanks at a time in the C-17 class transport aircraft as the tank is light and can be run at high speeds in mountain valleys.
The trials are expected to be completed in the next 12-18 months and be ready for induction.

Collaboration for Zorawar Tank Development
The development of the Zorawar light battle tank is a significant achievement resulting from collaboration between two key organizations:
  • DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation): The DRDO is responsible for the research and development of defense technologies in India. In the case of the Zorawar tank, DRDO led the design and engineering efforts, aiming to create a tank suitable for high-altitude warfare.
  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T): L&T, a major engineering and construction company in India, collaborated with DRDO in the manufacturing and integration of systems for the Zorawar tank. Their involvement was crucial in bringing the tank to the prototype stage rapidly.

Significance of the Collaboration
This partnership is noteworthy because:
  • Joint Effort: The successful integration of advanced technologies and manufacturing capabilities highlights the synergy between a government research body (DRDO) and a private sector company (L&T).
  • Rapid Development: The Zorawar tank is an example of how collaborative efforts can lead to quick turnaround times in defense manufacturing, with the prototype being developed in just two years.
  • Enhanced Capability: The Zorawar tank is designed to provide the Indian Army with improved mobility and firepower in challenging terrains, particularly in high-altitude regions.

In conclusion, the collaboration between DRDO and Larsen & Toubro has been instrumental in the development of the Zorawar tank, demonstrating the effective partnership between public and private sectors in India's defense initiatives.

Passage:Management is a set of processesthat can keep a complicated system of people and technology running smoothly. The most important aspects of management include planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, controlling, and problem-solving. Leadership is a set of processes that creates organisations in the first place or adapts them to significantly changing circumstances. Leadership defines what the future should look like, aligns people with that vision, and inspires them to make it happen despite the obstacles. This distinction is absolutely crucial for our purposes here: Successful transformation is 70 to 90 percent leadership and only 10 to 30 percent management. Yet for historical reasons, many organisations today don‘t have much leadership. And almost everyone thinks about the problems here as one of managing change. For most of this century, as we created thousands and thousands of large organizations for the first time in human history, we didn‘t have enough good managers to keep all those bureaucracies functioning. So many companies and universities developed management programs, and hundreds and thousands of people were encouraged to learn management on the job. And they did. But, people were taught little about leadership. To some degree, management was emphasized because it‘s easier to teach than leadership. But even more so, management was the main item on the twentieth-century agenda because that‘s what was needed. For every entrepreneur or business builder who was a leader, we needed hundreds of managers to run their ever growing enterprises. Unfortunately for us today, this emphasis on management has often been institutionalized in corporate cultures that discourage employees from learning how to lead. Ironically, past success is usually the key ingredient in producing this outcome. The syndrome, as I have observed it on many occasions, goes like this: success creates some degree of market dominance, which in turn produces much growth. After a while keeping the ever larger organizations under control becomes the primary challenge. So attention turns inward, and managerial competencies are nurtured. With a strong emphasis on management but not on leadership, bureaucracy and an inward focus take over. But with continued success, the result mostly of market dominance, the problem often goes unaddressed and an unhealthy arrogance begins to evolve. All of these characteristics then make any transformation effort much more difficult. Arrogant managers can over- evaluate their current performance and competitive position, listen poorly, and learn slowly. Inwardly focused employees can have difficulty seeing the very forces that present threats and opportunities.Bureaucratic cultures can smother those who want to respond to shifting conditions. And the lack of leadership leaves no fore inside these organizations to break out of the morass.Q.Why did companies and universities develop programs to prepare managers in such a large number?
