The Marseillaise is a patriotic song that was composed by Roget de Lisle, a French army officer, in 1792. It was originally titled "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin" (War Song for the Army of the Rhine) and was written to inspire French soldiers during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Composition
Roget de Lisle composed the song in Strasbourg on the night of April 25-26, 1792. He was asked by the mayor of Strasbourg to create a song that would rally the troops and inspire them to defend France against the invading Prussian army. Roget de Lisle wrote the lyrics and the melody in a single night and it quickly became popular among the troops.

History
The song was first performed by the volunteers from Marseilles when they marched into Paris on July 30, 1792. The song became an instant hit and was adopted as the national anthem of France in 1795. The Marseillaise was banned during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte but was restored to its place as the national anthem after his downfall in 1815.

Importance
The Marseillaise is an important symbol of French patriotism and has been used in many historical events. It was sung by French soldiers during World War I and II and became a symbol of resistance against German occupation during World War II. The song is still played at official government functions in France and is often heard at international sporting events when French athletes win gold medals.
