Because the capitalism of Marx’s time was a lot different to the modern consumer society we see today. Marx was living in a society undergoing rapid change. Industrialisation was allowing smaller numbers of people to farm larger amounts of land, creating a massive unemployed class of former farm labourers, with no education, no money, and no prospects.....
