Causes
1. Continuous civil war. Even when Rome was only a desolated city and the Pelopponese, they were still plagued by civil war.

2. Sacking of Constantinople: the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders turned the queen of cities into a desolated village, as well as destroying the Roman monopoly on silk in Europe.

3. The skill of the Turks: they were just good, like Mehmed the Conqueror.

4. 200 years of continuous war: Rome had been fighting the Latins, Serbia, Genoese, Balgars, and Turks for 200 years nonstop.

5. Failure of Europeans to come to aid: the Kings of Poland-Hungary, Serbia and Bohemia raised an army to crush the Ottomans, but the army was crushed by the Ottomans at Varna, which resulted in deaths of the king of Poland, Hungary, and Bohemia. After that, Eastern Europeans were too scaredto help Byzantium, and Western Europeans were indifferent.

- External threats from barbarian invasions, particularly by the Visigoths and Vandals, posed a significant challenge to the Empire's defenses.
- The division of the Empire into the Western and Eastern regions in 285 AD further weakened its unity and ability to defend itself.
- The sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410 AD and the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD marked the end of ancient Rome's dominance in Europe.
