  • But in the case of Mn & Fe both of them has 3d5 configuration which is more stable & decreases the chances of distortion.
  • In the case of Cr3+ less number of electrons are present, so, less electron-electron repulsion hence lesser will be the distortion.
  • When there is unsymmetrical filling of electron in Eg orbital occur, the shape will distorted e.g. in the case of d4. This is known as Jahn-Teller distortion.

Distortion in Octahedral Complexes

Octahedral complexes are those complexes in which a central metal ion is surrounded by six ligands in octahedral geometry. These ligands can be either neutral or charged. The octahedral geometry is the most common geometry observed in coordination compounds.

Distortion in octahedral complexes occurs due to the presence of different ligands or due to the presence of lone pairs on the central metal ion. The distortion can be either tetragonal distortion or trigonal distortion.

Tetragonal distortion occurs when the ligands along the z-axis are different from the ligands in the xy-plane. This results in elongation or compression of the octahedron along the z-axis.

Trigonal distortion occurs when the ligands in the xy-plane are different from the ligands along the z-axis. This results in a distortion of the octahedron in the form of a triangular prism.

Distorted Octahedral Complexes

Out of the given complexes, only [Cr(H2O)6]2 is distorted. The reason for this is as follows:

- In [Cr(H2O)6]2, the chromium ion is in the +2 oxidation state, which means it has four d-electrons. These d-electrons occupy the t2g orbitals.
- The six water molecules occupy the six octahedral positions around the chromium ion, resulting in an octahedral geometry.
- However, the two d-electrons in the eg orbitals are unpaired, which causes a Jahn-Teller distortion. This distortion results in an elongation of the octahedron along the z-axis.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'A' [Cr(H2O)6]2.
