Why the distance between two polynucleotide chains in DNA remains constant?
Verified Answer
Why the distance between two polynucleotide chains in DNA remains cons...
The bases in two strands of DNA are paired through hydrogen bond (H-bonds) and form base pairs .
Adenine forms two hydrogen bonds with Thymine from opposite strand and Thymine forms two hydrogen bonds with Thymine from the opposite strand.

Similarly, Guanine and Cytosine are bonded with three H-bonds. As a result of these bonds, the distance between two polynucleotide chains in DNA remains almost constant.

Each polynucleotide chain of a double helical DNA structure is attached each other by hydrogen bonding forming specific number of base pairs.

Adenine forms two hydrogen bonds with Thymine from opposite strand and Thymine forms two hydrogen bonds with Adenine.

Similarly, Guanine is bonded with Cytosine with three hydrogen bonds.

As a result of these bonds, the distance between two polynucleotide chains in DNA remains (almost) constant.
