Solutions of zinc sulphate
(I), copper sulphate
(II), aluminum sulphate
(III) and iron sulphate
(IV) were taken in four test tubes.
An iron nail was put in each solution and the system was left undisturbed for an hour. In which set up or set ups the iron nail be coated?
  • a)
    only in IV
  • b)
    I and II
  • c)
    only in II
  • d)
    II and III
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Solutions of zinc sulphate(I), copper sulphate(II), aluminum sulphate(...
Option C is correct , because as per reactivity series copper is low reative than ferrous (iron) so the solution is changed to ferrous sulphate according to the displacement reaction. But when we take ferrous sulphate, zinc sulphate and aluminium sulphate solutions these are having higher reactive metals than ferrous so there will be no reaction taking place therefore no reaction in these solutions

Solutions of zinc sulphate(I), copper sulphate(II), aluminum sulphate(...
Solution:

When iron nails are put in each of the solutions of zinc sulphate(I), copper sulphate(II), aluminum sulphate(III) and iron sulphate(IV) and left undisturbed for an hour, the following reactions occur:

1. Zinc sulphate(I) solution and iron nail:

The reaction between zinc sulphate(I) solution and iron nail is as follows:

Fe + ZnSO4 → FeSO4 + Zn

In this reaction, the iron nail loses electrons and gets oxidized to form ferrous sulphate while zinc ions present in the solution gain electrons and get reduced to form zinc metal. Therefore, there will be no coating of iron on the nail.

2. Copper sulphate(II) solution and iron nail:

The reaction between copper sulphate(II) solution and iron nail is as follows:

Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu

In this reaction, the iron nail loses electrons and gets oxidized to form ferrous sulphate while copper(II) ions present in the solution gain electrons and get reduced to form copper metal. Therefore, there will be coating of copper on the nail.

3. Aluminum sulphate(III) solution and iron nail:

The reaction between aluminum sulphate(III) solution and iron nail is as follows:

2Fe + Al2(SO4)3 → 2FeSO4 + Al

In this reaction, the iron nail loses electrons and gets oxidized to form ferrous sulphate while aluminum ions present in the solution gain electrons and get reduced to form aluminum metal. Therefore, there will be coating of aluminum on the nail.

4. Iron sulphate(IV) solution and iron nail:

The reaction between iron sulphate(IV) solution and iron nail is as follows:

Fe + FeSO4 → Fe2(SO4)3

In this reaction, the iron nail loses electrons and gets oxidized to form ferric sulphate. Therefore, there will be no coating of iron on the nail.

Conclusion:

From the above reactions, we can conclude that the iron nail will be coated with copper in setup II and with aluminum in setup III. Therefore, the correct answer is option 'C' (only in II and III).
