Most Upvoted Answer
15ml of water and 10ml of sulphuric acid are to be mixed in breaker. a...
(a) The method to be followed is that , acid (sulphuric acid) should be added to water , and not vice versa. That is , water should NEVER be added to acid. This is because water reacts very vigorously when added to acid, and releases a large amount of heat , and splashes the concentrated acid( sulphuric acid) out of the container. Hence, it is COMPULSORY to add acid to water , as only a little amount of heat is released, and also the reaction won't be that violent.
(b) The process of adding acid to water , is called dilution of acids.

Method to Follow for Mixing Water and Sulphuric Acid

  • Wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles and apron before starting the process.

  • Add water to the breaker first, then slowly pour in the sulphuric acid while stirring continuously.

  • Ensure that the mixture is stirred gently and carefully to prevent it from splashing out of the container.

  • After mixing, let the solution cool down to room temperature before handling it further.

  • Label the container with the contents and date of preparation.

  • Dispose of the acidic mixture safely and properly according to the guidelines and regulations in your area.

Process of Mixing Water and Sulphuric Acid

The process of mixing water and sulphuric acid is known as dilution. Dilution involves adding a solvent (usually water) to a concentrated solution to decrease its concentration. Sulphuric acid is a highly corrosive and dangerous chemical that can cause severe burns and damage to living tissues. Therefore, it is essential to dilute the acid before using it for various purposes such as laboratory experiments, industrial processes or cleaning agents.

In dilution, the amount of solute (acid) remains constant while the volume of the resulting solution increases. The concentration of the diluted solution depends on the ratio of solute to solvent. For instance, if 10ml of sulphuric acid is added to 15ml of water, the resulting solution will have a lower concentration of acid than the original solution. The pH of the diluted solution will also be less acidic and closer to neutral (pH 7) than the concentrated acid.

Dilution is a common technique used in chemistry, biology, medicine and other fields to prepare solutions of different concentrations and volumes. It is important to follow the correct procedure and safety precautions when diluting hazardous chemicals to avoid accidents and injuries.
