The process of gas exchange in the human body is also known as the process of inspiration and expiration.

Inspiration is when you are breathing in. The diaphragm moves downward, allowing for the lungs to expand. The lungs expand to be filled with air and the air pressure in the alveoli (the final point of inspiration as air passed through the lungs) becomes less than atmospheric pressure. Because the atmospheric pressure within the alveoli is less, air is forced in by the higher atmospheric pressure on the outside of the body.

Expiration is when you are breathing out. The diaphragm relaxes and moves back up, the lungs contract, and the air pressure in the alveoli is now more than the pressure externally which causes the air to be forced out of the lungs. When the air moves out of the lungs you breath out in what is known as an exhalation.

Inhalation and Exhalation

1. Inhalation: The process of gaseous exchange begins with inhalation. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, while the intercostal muscles between the ribs contract, causing the rib cage to expand. This increases the volume of the thoracic cavity, resulting in a decrease in pressure. As a result, air from the atmosphere rushes into the lungs through the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles.

2. Exhalation: Exhalation is the process of expelling the waste carbon dioxide from the body. During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, while the intercostal muscles relax, causing the rib cage to contract. This decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity, increasing the pressure. The increased pressure forces the carbon dioxide-rich air out of the lungs and back into the atmosphere.

Gaseous Exchange in the Alveoli

1. Diffusion: The main process of gaseous exchange occurs in the alveoli. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli and into the surrounding capillaries. Similarly, carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli.

2. Capillaries: The alveoli are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. The walls of the capillaries are extremely thin, allowing for efficient exchange of gases between the bloodstream and the alveoli.

3. Oxygen Transport: Oxygen binds to hemoglobin molecules in red blood cells and is transported throughout the body via the bloodstream. It is then released into the cells where it is used for cellular respiration.

4. Carbon Dioxide Transport: Carbon dioxide produced during cellular respiration is transported in the bloodstream, mainly in the form of bicarbonate ions. It is carried back to the lungs, where it is exchanged for oxygen and expelled from the body during exhalation.
