Life Cycle – Silk Moth: Actually silkworms are not worms, but the larvae or caterpillars hatched from the eggs of the silk moth. The life history of a silk moth starts when a female silk moth lays eggs.
The larvae or caterpillars hatched from the eggs of the silk moth. These silkworms feed on fresh mulberry leaves the silkworm grows in size and then becomes a pupa.
In the pupa stage, it weaves a net to hold itself. It then swings its head from side to side, secreting a fibre that hardens on contact with air. This fibre is made of a protein and becomes the silk fibre.
The caterpillar covers itself completely with silk fibre and turns into a pupa, this covering is known as the cocoon. The moth continues to develop within the cocoon. The silk thread or yarn is obtained from the silk moth’s cocoon.

Life Cycle of Silk Moth
- Egg Stage: The life cycle of a silk moth begins with the female moth laying eggs on the leaves of the mulberry tree. Each female moth can lay hundreds of eggs.
- Larva Stage: The eggs hatch into larvae, also known as silkworms. These larvae feed on mulberry leaves for about 4-6 weeks, growing rapidly and molting several times.
- Pupa Stage: After the larva has grown to its full size, it stops eating and spins a cocoon made of silk threads around itself. Inside the cocoon, the larva transforms into a pupa. This stage lasts for about 2-3 weeks.
- Adult Stage: Once the transformation is complete, the adult silk moth emerges from the cocoon. The adult moth is unable to eat and its sole purpose is to mate. After mating, the female silk moth lays eggs to start the cycle again.
- Silk Production: The silk moth is primarily known for its ability to produce silk. The silk is harvested by carefully unraveling the cocoon without damaging the silk threads. The threads are then spun together to create silk fabric.
- Commercial Silk Production: In commercial silk production, the cocoons are boiled to kill the pupa inside before they can emerge as moths. This process ensures that the silk threads remain intact for harvesting.
- Life Cycle Continues: The life cycle of the silk moth continues as the eggs hatch into larvae, grow into pupae, and emerge as adult moths to produce more silk.
