It is a type of asexual reproduction observed in multicellular organisms like filamentous algae ( Spirogyra) . These organisms on maturation breakup into or more small fragments or pieces . Each fragment subsequently grows to form a complete new organism . This type of cell division is seen in  multicellular organisms with a relatively simple body organisation.

Fragmentation generally occurs among multicellular organisms with a simple structure. That is, these organisms do not have a well organised body with special organs and tissues for different functions, but are made up of more than one cell.

In this process, the organism breaks into multiple pieces or fragments. Each of these fragments will grow into separate organisms capable of independent existence.

Fragmentation is not to be confused with regeneration, as regeneration is not the same as reproduction. Even the process of a lizard growing back it's tail is regeneration whereas the same cannot be said about fragmentation.
