Which one of the following statements is correct about the reference m...
The substantial reference to Israel-Palestine peace process in the joint statement issued after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday assumes significance, coming as it does ahead of the PM’s proposed visit to Palestine, the UAE and Oman next month, and Jordan King’s India trip.

They reaffirmed their support for an early resumption of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians for arriving at a comprehensive negotiated solution on all outstanding issues, based on mutual recognition and effective security arrangements, for establishing a just and durable peace in the region,” the statement said.

The reference to early resumption of peace talks is significant, according to experts, who said a “comprehensive negotiated solution&rdquo
is key to lasting peace in the volatile region. Besides, the timing of the statement underlines India’s position ahead of the PM’s trip. India has, over the decades, called for a “two-state solution” to end the conflict in West Asia and it hopes to use its good offices with both Israel and Palestine to contribute to the peace process.

Since Modi’s visit to Israel in July last year, his last trip to West Asia, the situation in the region has turned far more complicated, with rapid changes in Saudi Arabia and its ties with Qatar and Iran, and US President Donald Trump’s decision to shift the embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. India not only disapproved of President Trump’s decision but also voted in favour of the UN resolution introduced by Egypt condemning Trump’s move

During January and February India will also be engaging with Palestinians, Jordanians and Egyptians — key stakeholders in Israel-Palestine crisis — on the way forward. Jordan, whose ties with India have been on the upswing over the past few years, is the custodian of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the old city of Jerusalem (third holy site in Islam) and therefore has a significant say in Palestinian affairs. The mosque remains under the administration of the Jordanian and Palestinian-led islamic waqf
