Bond Order and Bond Type in C2 Molecule

Bond Order:
Bond order is defined as the number of chemical bonds between two atoms. In the case of the C2 molecule, the bond order can be calculated by using the formula:
Bond Order = ½ (Number of Electrons in Bonding MO – Number of Electrons in Antibonding MO)
The molecular orbital diagram of C2 molecule shows that there are four bonding electrons and two antibonding electrons. Therefore, the bond order can be calculated as:
Bond Order = ½ (4-2) = 1

Bond Type:
The bond type is determined by the type of orbitals that overlap to form a bond. In the case of the C2 molecule, there are two types of bonds: sigma bonds and pi bonds.

Sigma Bond:
A sigma bond is formed by head-on overlapping of two atomic orbitals. In the case of the C2 molecule, the two carbon atoms are bonded by a sigma bond, which is formed by the overlap of two sp hybrid orbitals. Therefore, there are two sigma bonds in the C2 molecule.
