Given,
Volume of hydrogen gas adsorbed, V = 1.12 cm3/g
Density of hydrogen gas, ρ = 0.07 g/cm3

Calculation of monolayer coverage

Monolayer coverage, θ = (V/M) × (1/NA) × (1/σ)

where M is the molar mass of hydrogen gas, NA is Avogadro number, and σ is the surface area per gram of adsorbent.

Molar mass of H2 gas, M = 2 g/mol
Avogadro number, NA = 6.022 × 1023 /mol

Let us assume that the surface area of adsorbent available for adsorption is S in cm2/g. Then, σ = S/g.

Substituting the given values, we get

θ = (1.12/2) × (1/6.022 × 1023) × (1/S) = 9.27 × 10-5/S

Calculation of radius of hydrogen molecule

The radius of hydrogen molecule adsorbed can be determined using the following equation:

r = [(3M/4πNAρθ)]1/3

Substituting the values in the above equation, we get

r = [(3 × 2/4π × 6.022 × 1023 × 0.07 × 9.27 × 10-5/S)]1/3

r = (0.00967/S)1/3

Given that 1 g of charcoal adsorbs 100 ml of 0.5 M CH3COOH to form a monolayer, and the polarity of CH3COOH reduces to 0.49.

Calculation of surface area of adsorbent

The surface area of adsorbent can be determined using the following equation:

SA = (100 × 0.5 × 10-3 × 6.022 × 1023)/(0.49 × 1)

SA = 7.76 × 1020 cm2/g

Substituting the value of S in the equation for r, we get

r = (0.00967/7.76 × 1020)1/3

r = 2.24 × 10-5 cm

Therefore, the radius of adsorbed hydrogen molecule is 2.24 × 10-5 cm.
