Compound Tubulo Alveolar Mammary Glands

Mammary glands are specialized exocrine glands that are present in the breasts of female mammals. These glands produce milk during lactation to nourish their young ones. The mammary glands are composed of lobes and lobules, which contain the secretory units or alveoli. The alveoli are the functional units that produce milk.

The mammary glands are classified based on the structure of their duct system and secretory units. The active mammary glands are classified as compound tubuloalveolar glands. Let's understand this classification in detail:

Compound Glands:
The mammary glands are compound glands as they have a complex duct system that branches and divides into smaller ducts, which finally open into the nipple. The duct system is responsible for transporting the milk from the alveoli to the nipple. The mammary glands are also connected to the lymphatic system, which helps in the removal of waste products.

Tubular Glands:
The mammary glands are tubular as they have long, narrow ducts that connect the secretory units or alveoli to the duct system. The tubular glands are responsible for the production of milk.

Alveolar Glands:
The mammary glands are alveolar as the secretory units are composed of small sac-like structures called alveoli. The alveoli are the functional units that produce milk. The alveoli are lined by milk-secreting cells called alveolar epithelial cells, which are surrounded by myoepithelial cells that contract during lactation to squeeze the milk out of the alveoli.

Compound Tubuloalveolar Glands:
Therefore, the active mammary glands are classified as compound tubuloalveolar glands as they have a complex duct system that branches and divides into smaller ducts, which finally open into the nipple. The ducts are tubular and connect the secretory units or alveoli, which are alveolar and produce milk.
