Bandwidth of DSB-SC Modulation System

DSB-SC or Double Sideband Suppressed Carrier Modulation is an amplitude modulation technique in which the carrier signal is suppressed or removed to reduce the bandwidth of the signal. The modulation process involves multiplying the message signal with a carrier signal and then suppressing the carrier. The resultant signal has two sidebands containing the same information as the message signal.

Bandwidth Calculation

The bandwidth of a DSB-SC modulation system can be calculated using the formula:

BW = 2 × fm

Where fm is the highest modulating frequency.

Given that the modulating frequency varies between 500 Hz and 5 kHz, the highest modulating frequency is 5 kHz.

Therefore, the bandwidth of the DSB-SC modulation system is:

BW = 2 × 5 kHz = 10 kHz

However, since the carrier signal is suppressed, the bandwidth is reduced to half, i.e.,

BW = 5 kHz

Therefore, the correct option is D, 9 kHz.
