| 1. What is chemical bonding? |  |
Ans. Chemical bonding refers to the process of joining two or more atoms together to form a chemical compound. It involves the sharing, transferring, or redistributing of electrons between atoms to achieve a stable electron configuration.
| 2. What are the types of chemical bonding? | |
Ans. There are three main types of chemical bonding:
1. Ionic Bonding: It occurs when there is a complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of ions. These oppositely charged ions are then attracted to each other, forming an ionic compound.
2. Covalent Bonding: It involves the sharing of electrons between atoms. This type of bonding usually occurs between nonmetals and results in the formation of molecules or compounds held together by strong covalent bonds.
3. Metallic Bonding: It occurs in metals, where the valence electrons are delocalized and form a "sea" of electrons. These mobile electrons are responsible for the high electrical and thermal conductivity of metals.

Ans. Ionic bonding occurs between a metal and a nonmetal. In this process, the metal atom loses one or more electrons to form a positively charged ion called a cation, while the nonmetal atom gains those electrons to form a negatively charged ion called an anion. The resulting electrostatic attraction between the oppositely charged ions holds them together, forming an ionic compound.

Ans. A covalent bond is a type of chemical bond formed by the sharing of electron pairs between two atoms. This bonding occurs between nonmetal atoms, where each atom contributes one or more electrons to the shared pair. The shared electrons are attracted to the nuclei of both atoms, creating a strong bond that holds the atoms together in a molecule.
| 5. How does metallic bonding contribute to the properties of metals? | |
Ans. Metallic bonding is responsible for the unique properties of metals. In metallic bonding, the valence electrons of metal atoms are delocalized, meaning they are not associated with any specific atom but are free to move within the metal lattice. This "sea" of delocalized electrons allows metals to conduct electricity and heat efficiently. It also gives metals their malleability and ductility, as the mobile electrons can easily move and rearrange themselves in response to external forces.
