| 1. What are colloids and how are they classified? |  |
Ans. Colloids are mixtures in which particles of one substance are dispersed throughout another substance. They consist of two phases: a dispersed phase (the particles) and a continuous phase (the medium in which the particles are dispersed). Colloids can be classified into four main types: sol, gel, emulsion, and aerosol. Sol colloids have solid particles dispersed in a liquid medium, gel colloids have a three-dimensional network structure, emulsion colloids have liquid droplets dispersed in another immiscible liquid, and aerosol colloids have solid or liquid particles dispersed in a gas medium.

Ans. A sol colloid is a type of colloid in which solid particles are dispersed in a liquid medium. The particles in a sol colloid are relatively small and do not settle down over time. They remain evenly dispersed in the liquid due to the repulsive forces between the particles. Examples of sol colloids include milk, ink, and blood.
| 3. How are gel colloids different from sol colloids? | |
Ans. Gel colloids differ from sol colloids in their structure. Gel colloids have a three-dimensional network structure formed by the particles, which gives them a semi-solid or gel-like consistency. Unlike sol colloids, gel colloids do not flow freely and can retain their shape. Examples of gel colloids include gelatin, agar-agar, and toothpaste.
| 4. What is an emulsion colloid? | |
Ans. An emulsion colloid is a type of colloid in which liquid droplets are dispersed in another immiscible liquid. The two liquids in an emulsion colloid do not mix or dissolve in each other. The droplets of one liquid are dispersed throughout the other liquid, forming a stable mixture. Examples of emulsion colloids include milk (which is an emulsion of fat droplets in water), mayonnaise, and salad dressings.
| 5. What is an aerosol colloid? | |
Ans. An aerosol colloid is a type of colloid in which solid or liquid particles are dispersed in a gas medium. These particles are small enough to remain suspended in the gas and can be easily dispersed by air currents. Examples of aerosol colloids include fog (water droplets dispersed in air), smoke (solid particles dispersed in air), and air pollution particles.
