Attention stargazers! The super blue moon is here and will be visible worldwide for the next two days. A full moon that is both a blue moon and a supermoon is called a super blue moon. This phenomenon occurs just a few times a year. During this time, the moon will appear bigger and brighter. This is the only super blue moon of this year.
Contrary to its name, a super blue moon will not be blue in colour. In some instances, it could actually appear in an orange/red colour due to the scattering of light caused by dust particles from wildfires in the Earth’s atmosphere.
This will be the first of the four remaining supermoons of 2024, which will be followed by three more supermoons on September 17, October 17, and November 15.
A super blue moon will be visible until this Wednesday from across the world. It is also the third of four full moons in a season. A super blue moon is up to 30 per cent brighter and up to 14 per cent larger than a usual full moon. If a full moon appears twice a month, it is also called a blue moon.
When the moon is closest to the Earth, it is known as perigee, making it appear slightly bigger than usual. When the moon is farthest from the Earth, it is known as apogee, making it look slightly smaller. At perigee, the moon is around 363,300 kilometres away from the Earth, and at apogee, it is around 405,500 km away.
