When two solutes have similar properties and are soluble in the same solvent, they can enhance each other's solubility through a process called co-solvency. However, if the solutes have different properties or are not compatible with each other, they may compete for the solvent molecules and reduce the overall solubility. This phenomenon is known as salting out or salting in, depending on whether the solubility decreases or increases, respectively.
