Breathing and Exchange of Gases
Flash cards
Breathing process of exchange of O2 from the atmosphere with
Co2 produced by the cells
Animals have different respiratory organs based on
1. Habitat
2.Level of organisation
Example:poriferans, which have cellular level of organisation
have no organs or developed tissues and hence respire by
means of diffusion over their entire body surface.

Lower Invertebrates
These don't have well developed organs and generally use
diffusion to respire. earthworms use their cuticle which is their
outer covering, moist, thin and vascular. insects like
cockroaches use a tracheal network of tubes which have small
openings called spiracles which allow oxygen to enter and
carbon dioxide to leave the body. aquatic arthropods like Unio
use gills which are plate like or filamentous vascularised
structures.

Respiratory system of vertebrates
1. Fish like cartligenous or bony fish use gills.
2. Tadpoles also use gills but adult frogs generally use their
moist skin to respire.
3. Reptiles and mammals have lungs.
