General Introduction (Continued)
These are the hydrocarbons in which Carbon - Carbon contains
single bond. (Saturated hydrocarbon).
These are also called as ‘Paraffins’ (Parum + Affinis i.e. less
reactive).
In alkane if chiral carbon or unsymmetrical carbon is present,
then it shows optical isomerism.

FAQs on Flashcards for JEE Chemistry - Hydrocarbons Class 11

1. What are hydrocarbons?
Ans. Hydrocarbons are organic compounds that consist of only hydrogen and carbon atoms. They are the simplest form of organic compounds and can be found naturally in fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
2. How are hydrocarbons classified?
Ans. Hydrocarbons are classified into two main types: aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. Aliphatic hydrocarbons are further divided into three categories: alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. Aromatic hydrocarbons, on the other hand, are characterized by a ring-like structure and include compounds such as benzene.
3. What are the uses of hydrocarbons?
Ans. Hydrocarbons have a wide range of uses in various industries. They are used as fuels for heating, transportation, and electricity generation. They are also used as raw materials in the production of plastics, solvents, lubricants, and various chemicals.
4. How are hydrocarbons harmful to the environment?
Ans. Hydrocarbons, especially those derived from fossil fuels, contribute to environmental pollution. When burned, they release greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which contribute to global warming and climate change. Additionally, hydrocarbon spills can contaminate soil and water sources, causing harm to ecosystems and wildlife.
5. Can hydrocarbons be found in renewable energy sources?
Ans. Yes, hydrocarbons can be found in renewable energy sources such as biofuels. Biofuels are derived from organic materials such as plants and algae, and they contain hydrocarbon molecules. These biofuels can be used as a substitute for traditional fossil fuels and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
