1. What is gas transport and how does it occur in the human body?

Ans.Gas transport refers to the movement of gases, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the lungs and the body's tissues. This process occurs through diffusion, where oxygen is absorbed from the alveoli in the lungs into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, is released from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

2. What are the mechanisms of gas exchange in the lungs?

Ans.Gas exchange in the lungs primarily occurs through a process called diffusion across the alveolar membrane. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses into the blood in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. This exchange is facilitated by the concentration gradients of the gases.

3. How is oxygen transported in the blood?

Ans.Oxygen is primarily transported in the blood bound to hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells. About 98.5% of oxygen is carried this way, while the remaining 1.5% is dissolved directly in the plasma. Hemoglobin picks up oxygen in the lungs and releases it in the tissues where it is needed.

4. What role does carbon dioxide play in gas transport?

Ans.Carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product of cellular metabolism and is transported in the blood back to the lungs for exhalation. It is carried in three ways: dissolved in plasma, as bicarbonate ions after reacting with water, and bound to hemoglobin. This transport is crucial for maintaining the body's pH balance.

5. Why is the efficiency of gas exchange important for overall health?

Ans.The efficiency of gas exchange is vital for maintaining adequate oxygen levels for cellular functions and removing carbon dioxide to prevent acidosis. Impaired gas exchange can lead to hypoxia (low oxygen levels) and respiratory acidosis, which can adversely affect organ function and overall health.
